I'll pay money for a Firefox extension which accomplishes the same as using a text editor adding this to $profile\user.js:
user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "localfilelinks");
user_pref("capability.policy.localfilelinks.sites", "http://intranet http://intranet2 http://www.internal.ca");
user_pref("capability.policy.localfilelinks.checkloaduri.enabled", "allAccess");
The extension would have the a gui for adding/removing entries to middle line, *.sites, similar to Internet Explorer. I envision accessing the gui from Tools > Addons menu like any other extension.
Bonus optional feature: use Open in External App from IE Tab extension when clicking on a local file link. It'd be great if this worked in Thunderbird too, but not required.
This is different from the local links extension in that it doesnt require context menu to use, simply clicking on the link will open the file link like any other.
My goal is to have an easy method for non technical staff to allow our internal website(s) to:
(a) ask the OS for credentials instead of the user (Active Directory, NTLM)
(b) open local file links in the browser or in external file manager (windows explorer) instead of doing nothing at all.
My current approach for (a) is to tell people how to "use about:config, in the filter field type ntlm, select network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris and add intranet-site to the list.
I don't have a budget for development. I can spend a small amount on off the shelf products without question. Registering a shareware program or donating to sourceforge project for example. The financial transaction needs to be conducted by visa, and I need an invoice/receipt on company letterhead.
So in this context, I'll pay ~$50 for a FF xpi I can host on our internal website that has (b) and/or (a) customized to our intranet domains. I realise this is a pittance compared to the time investment it takes to develop and debug even trivial software; I hope it's not insulting. It's what I have the freedom to do.
Contact at me via any of the means below to discuss this further.
Thanks.
