Pondering biz as usual

2020-Apr-24

Another topic to ponder: it's biz as usual -- as much as possible -- but should it be?

Covid-19 has irrevocably changed our societies on a truly global scale. Things are not going to go back to the way they were. The change will be larger than 911, maybe bigger than the internet becoming a daily life commons. We're doing business as usual as best we can, because, well, what else can we do?

Outside of CO Services and Park Officers we're not emergency responders or health care or grocery clerks or any of the other many professions that encounter this head on. As a matter of fact we may be among the few who can proceed more or less as normal. For a little while anyway. But should we be?

We're flexible and provably capable of rapid change.  A dept that is organized in the right way to quickly adapt to very different circumstances and keep working, to not drop the ball. Maybe this unique freedom to act could be applied differently. If there's a pivot, now's the time to do it. It won't be long before the slow folding implosion reaches us and we're wrapped and bonded into the next new normal.

…and maybe the simplicity of embodying "this is how to be normal when nothing is normal" is the greatest gift we can give, examples in action.
